First grade students have two 35-minute music classes each week. One class with music specialist Mrs. Thompson and one with the K-1 MAPE (music, art & PE) teacher, Miss Piekarski.
The first grade music curriculum is based on Ohio’s Academic Content Standards in Music, specifically the grade level indicators for first grade.
Music instruction is purposefully designed with active instruction to meet the needs of all learners.
Some of the things Ohio’s Academic Content Standards in Music expect first grade students to know and be able to do by the end of first grade include:
· Sing, listen and move to music from various historical periods.
· Identify, listen and respond to music of different composers.
· Sing, alone and with others, a varied repertoire of songs with accurate rhythm and developing accurate pitch.
· Play, alone and with others, a variety of classroom instruments with proper technique. (e.g. drum, triangle, finger cymbals, xylophones)
· Music literacy - Read, write and perform using music with eighth notes, quarter notes and quarter rests.
· Music literacy - Read, write and perform melodies on the music staff including the pitches so, mi and la.
· Identify and demonstrate elements of music using developmentally appropriate vocabulary (e.g. beat, rhythm, pitch, etc.)
· Attend live music performances and demonstrate audience behavior appropriate for the context and style of the music performed. All first grade students will go on a music field trip in May to hear and see the Akron Symphony Orchestra play a Concert for Kids. Look for more details in the spring.
· Recognize connections between music experiences and other curriculum subjects (lots of connections are made conscious with English Language Arts and social studies, in particular).
Feel free to contact either Mrs. Thompson or Miss Piekarski via email or phone if you have a question, concern or comment. Contact information is available on the district web site.
Third grade students have two 35-minute music classes each week with music specialist Mrs. Thompson, National Board Certified Teacher.
Nordonia’s music curriculum is based on Ohio’s Academic Content Standards in Music, specifically the grade level indicators for third grade.
Music instruction is purposefully designed with active, engaging instruction to meet the needs of all learners. Musical skills are learned through instruction and refined through multiple experiences – not genetically inherited. Music is for everyone!
Some of the things Ohio’s Academic Content Standards in Music expect third grade students to know and be able to do by the end of third grade include:
· Identify and demonstrate musical forms inc. AB form and verse/refrain form.
· Sing, listen and move to music from world cultures.
· Recognize and describe ways that music serves as an expression in various cultures.
· Sing, alone and with others, a varied repertoire of songs with accurate rhythm and pitch.
· Play, alone and with others, a variety of classroom instruments with proper technique. (Students will continue to expand their skills with xylophone, glockenspiel, drums, etc. – but their NEW instrument will be the recorder – a wind instrument.)
· Music literacy – Read, write and perform using sixteenth notes, eighth notes, quarter notes, half notes and quarter rests.
· Music literacy – Read, write and perform using six pitches – do, re, mi, so, la and high do – on the music staff and identify pitches with their ABC names, too.
· Identify the four families of orchestral instruments visually and aurally.
· Demonstrate how music communicates meaning of text, feelings, and moods or images.
· Attend live music performances (at school) and demonstrate audience behavior appropriate for the context and style of the music performed.
· Explain ways that the basic principles of music and subject matter of music are interrelated with disciplines outside the arts (e.g. English Language Arts, social studies, science and mathematics).
Especially important for third grade:
· All students will be given their own soprano recorder and recorder book (provided through school fees) around November 1, 2009.
· Students are responsible for bringing their recorder and book to every music class from November 1 through the end of the year.
· A recorder club will be established in January and all students have the opportunity to participate, but it is not mandatory.
Feel free to contact Mrs. Thompson via email or phone if you have a question, concern or comment. Contact information is available on the district web site.
