July 14 Coronavirus Message

I have several important items today, so please excuse the length of this message.

ACADEMIC BOOT CAMP

If you have a child entering grades 1-8 this fall, we are happy to offer you a FREE “Academic Boot Camp” in the subjects of Math and English/Language Arts. The purpose of the Boot Camp is to get our kids thinking about school again before we resume classes on September 8, and to offer some remediation needed due to instruction time lost during the Covid-19 school closure.

The program will be online, go at your own pace, available to students from August 10-28. To register, please fill out the form found here: https://tinyurl.com/NordoniaBootCamp2020 For questions, please contact Todd.Stuart@nordoniaschools.org

SCHOOL REOPENING PLAN TIMELINE

At the Monday, July 20 Board of Education meeting I will present a draft plan on reopening school in the fall. The meeting will be at 7 p.m. at Reinecker’s Bakery. Masks will be required, and spacing will be limited. No decisions will be made that evening, and I will give the same presentation on Facebook Live at 1 p.m. on Tuesday, July 21.

The Board will then hold a special meeting on Thursday, July 23 at 6 p.m. (location yet TBD) to discuss the draft and offer me feedback. I will take the Board’s feedback, finalize the plan, and release it no later than August 14. In reality, I hope to have the plan released by July 31, as we will need as much time as possible to work out the logistics and families will need time to decide what option they will choose for their children.

While there will be an open forum for public comment at the July 20 Board meeting, the best way to share your thoughts is by emailing the board members individually, or sending me an email at [email protected], which I will forward to the entire Board.

SCHOOL REOPENING THOUGHTS

While the reopening plan is still being finalized, I want to remind you of a few things:

1.      We will offer a remote learning option to families who opt their children out of returning to school in-person. The remote learning instruction will be provided by vendors Edmentum and Acellus and monitored by Nordonia teachers. Families who select this option will commit to a semester at a time.

2.      Families intending to send their children back to school in-person should be in the mindset that things will be different than they were before the pandemic. You should not expect that all students will be able to return to school without some form of social distancing and mask wearing. These details will be included in the reopening plan.

3.      We want to be able to have as many students return to school as possible. To make this happen in September, it is vital that we wear masks now to prevent community spread of the disease.

As you know, planning for educating children in this unusual time is a challenge. My leadership team and I thank you for your patience as we navigate these waters. Thanks for your continued support of the Nordonia Schools, and Go Knights!
