March 13 Coronavirus Update

Thank you for your continued support and flexibility as we work through these unprecedented times. As you know, to help prevent the community spread of COVID-19, the Nordonia Schools will be closed to students now through Tuesday, April 14. Students will return on April 15.

Today, teachers worked diligently creating lessons and activities for students to do at home during this extended absence. You should expect communication early next week from teachers and principals about expectations during this time at home. You will also hear information about times the schools may be open for students to get needed materials and medicines from school.

A few items today:

  • The Nordonia High School National Honor Society is compiling a list of available babysitters whose service, character, and leadership have already been assessed. If you have a need for a babysitter, please contact your building principal Monday for the list of available sitters. We can provide the list to families directly, but please do not post the list on any social media sites.

  • Starting Tuesday, every Nordonia student will be eligible to have a lunch provided and home delivered by the schools. These lunches will be reimbursable to the schools through the national free and reduced lunch program, but a student does not need to be on free or reduced lunch to participate in the program during this school closure period. You can enroll your child in this program by clicking this link: https://tinyurl.com/NordoniaMealPickupOrders

  • If your student or a Nordonia student you know does not have access to a computer or wifi at home, please contact Technology Director Mike Russ at 330-908-6229.

  • According to the Ohio Department of Education, “Any concerns about the administration of state assessments can and will be addressed, if necessary, after student health and safety have been assured.” To me that means we have no information and will wait for guidance from ODE.

  • Kindergarten tuition payments due April 3 may be deferred until school resumes.

  • Pay to participate fees for spring sports will be deferred until school resumes and we learn whether the athletic seasons will be played.

  • Because the school closure will cover such a long length of time between the 3rd and 4th grading period, for this year only we are transitioning to a semester grade. The work that students have completed to date in the third quarter will be carried over to the 4th quarter, and only a semester grade will be given. This will have no impact on GPAs or class rankings.

  • We are still conducting kindergarten registrations. Call Maria at 330-467-0580 to schedule an appointment.

  • A reminder, this closure will not impact seniors expecting to graduate, and there is no indication that the school year will be extended.

If you have any questions about anything related to the school closure or coronavirus, you can submit them here: https://tinyurl.com/NordoniaClosureQuestions

Questions will be answered daily.

These are unprecedented times, and we will get through them together through flexibility and common sense. Please understand this closure is not only to keep students and staff safe, but also to prevent the spread of COVID-19 as seen in other countries around the world.

As always, thanks for your continued support of the Nordonia Schools, and Go Knights!
