Nordonia students plan 5K fun run/walk to support hygiene section of Emergency Assistance Center

Studies show that a family of four in the United States spends $77 per month on hygiene and personal care items. The average minimum wage worker who works full-time makes $1,304 per month. While they make this much per month, the family of four spends $1,650 per month on basic items. As you can see, their wage is not nearly enough to cover the expenses. So, when it comes down to what expenses they can take off, the hygiene and personal care items may be the first ones to go.

“What can a family do?” you may be asking. There is a place local families can go to get assistance with these basic necessities. The Emergency Assistance Center is devoted to helping families from twelve different communities in Northeast Ohio. Although they are a great source of help, the center is in need of one of the one of the most wanted items: hygiene products. They have few hygiene products, but not nearly enough to support the 900 clients they serve monthly.

Four local students are planning a way to help the clients of the Emergency Assistance Center acquire the hygiene items they are in need of. They will be hosting a 5k fun run/walk. It is open to all families, and all proceeds will benefit the hygiene section of the Emergency Assistance Center. Everyone in the family can participate, and it will be of great help to the Emergency Assistance Center and their clients.

When the executive director of the Emergency Assistance Center, Joyce Hunt, was asked for any comments about these students’ project she replied, “I love it. For one thing, I am so excited to see young students engaging with their community. Definitely since the Emergency Assistance Center is seeing around 900 area people that are in need. So for these students to get involved is so helpful to us and of course the 900 people coming in seeking out these hygiene items. So, we are grateful for the involvement.”

The fun run/walk will be on May 21 at Nordonia High School. There will be three different events going on including a 5k fun run, a kids’ one-mile run, and a family one-mile walk. To register for this event and for more details go to the REGISTRATION PAGE.
