Bundle Up: We go outside every day for recess unless the temperature or wind chill is below 20. Fresh air and exercise are good for our children and learning. Be sure your child is prepared for outside recess. Students must stay on the blacktop unless they are wearing snow pants and snow boots. What is very helpful is having all of your child’s items labeled. Out lost and found grows quickly, and if items have names on them, we can help get them back to your child.
Kindergarten Registration will be held Feb 1, 7, or 9, 2012. Call (330) 467-0580 for an appointment. Many of you have been asking about kindergarten and what the program will look like next year. This has not yet been determined, but our BOE will consider options for next year and I will keep you posted. Our school board members are: Steve Bittel, Dan Gallagher, Klingenberg, Doug Masteller and Jim Virost. Mr. Bittel and Mr. Virost are new to our board.
Birthday Book Club is BACK!—Honor your student with a membership to PTA’s Birthday Book Club. Birthday Book Club benefits the Rushwood Elementary Library, and provides many new books for our children to read every year. Order forms and instructions have been sent home. Millionaire Minutes approaches the million mark! No one can deny the benefits of reading. Studies have shown that reading daily results in improved vocabulary and analytical thinking skills. And, it can be relaxing too!! Our relaxed Rushwood students are well on their way to greater genius! As of December 1, our children have read 779,663 minutes. We are well on our way to achieving our goal of 2 million minutes of reading. Keep up the good work, Rushwood! Thanks to Dawn Sedor for adding up ALL of those minutes!!
Race to the Top Update: Nordonia will train all educators in the new state standards in English language arts, mathematics, science, and social studies. You may have noticed that your children occasionally have substitutes while teachers attend meetings. RttT funds pay for training so all teachers will understand the new and revised standards in math, language arts, science and social studies before implementing them. In addition, teachers meet for one hour during the school day twice monthly to for teacher collaboration to analyze student work and plan interventions for students who do not meet the benchmarks. This is another initiative of RttT that is good for student learning and achievement.

Nordonia Knight Out with the Monsters!
